Red-Breasted Nuthatch, ca. 1934

Red-Breasted Nuthatch, ca. 1934

Can you imagine a group of young women mountaineering high in the Rockies then sitting down to a cup of tea and a plein air painting session? After researching this artist I learned Hilda Vincent Foster composed this red-breasted nuthatch in the 1930s while she was a member of the Women’s Sketch Hunters Club. A prolific artist of the mid-twentieth century, Foster participated in several other artist societies across Canada, including the Victoria Sketch Club. Family remembers that she went by the name Vince and enjoyed oceans swims in Saanich Inlet.
